Content shoots are one of the biggest line items in any brand's marketing budget. They're also one of the most wasteful. We've seen brands spend thousands on a single shoot day and walk away with three usable assets. That's not a budget problem. That's a planning problem.
At Haus of Muse, we run content shoots for brands regularly. Here's our process for getting maximum value from every single shoot day, so nothing goes to waste.
Pre-production is everything
The shoot itself is only 30% of the work. 70% happens before the camera ever rolls. If you show up to a shoot without a detailed plan, you're already burning money. Here's what needs to happen before shoot day:
- Shot list: Every single shot you need, numbered, with notes on angle, lighting, and purpose
- Content briefs: What platforms the content is for, what formats you need (Reels, Stories, feed posts, TikToks), and how many of each
- Wardrobe and props: Decided and prepared in advance. Not figured out on the day.
- Location: Scouted, booked, and confirmed. Have a backup plan for weather if shooting outdoors.
- Talent: Confirmed, briefed, and given call times. No-shows kill shoot days.
Batch your content
The secret to a profitable shoot day is batching. Don't shoot one video and move on. Set up a scene and shoot it five different ways: a Reel, a TikTok, a Story, a feed post, and a behind-the-scenes clip. Same setup, five assets. That's how you get 40+ pieces of content from a single shoot day.
One scene, five assets. That's how you turn a shoot day into a month of content.
Right-size your crew
Too many brands over-crew their shoots. You don't need a 12-person crew for social media content. Here's what you actually need for most shoots:
- 1 videographer (can also handle photo if skilled)
- 1 director/producer (manages the shot list and keeps things moving)
- 1 stylist/makeup (only if your content requires it)
- 1 assistant (handles props, lighting, and gear)
For bigger productions (brand films, commercials), you'll need more. But for social media content, keep it lean. Every extra person costs money and slows things down.
Post-production workflow
Don't wait until after the shoot to plan your edit. Know exactly how many final assets you need, what format each one is in, and where it's going to be posted. Edit in batches by format: all Reels first, then all TikToks, then all feed posts. You'll be faster and more consistent.
The bottom line
A great shoot day is 80% planning and 20% execution. Spend the time before the shoot and you'll walk away with weeks of content instead of a few posts. If you need help planning or executing a content shoot, let's talk. We handle everything from concept to final delivery.
